I Love Pizza and Champagne

I Love Pizza and Champagne

My favorite food meets my favorite drink, and the pairings that make it work.

Anybody who knows me knows one thing: pizza is my absolute favorite food. Like, absolute. I could eat it every day, and it's my go-to for any celebratory occasion.

And the only thing I love more than pizza is pizza and wine.

Now, when it comes to choosing the perfect wine pairing for pizza, there are many ways you can go. Personally, I love a slice of cheese or pepperoni pizza with a glass of Champagne.

Here are a few other wine recommendations for some of the most popular styles of pizza.

THE CLASSIC

A classic cheese slice is all about balance. The richness of the cheese and acidity of the tomato sauce call for wines with freshness and structure, like sparkling wine or Italian whites such as Vermentino, Gavi, or Pinot Grigio.

THE CROWD PLEASER

Pepperoni pizza brings spice, flavor, and salt, which makes it one of the most wine-friendly pizzas out there.

Try it with sparkling rosé or bright Italian reds like Chianti, Barbera, Lambrusco, or Barolo if you're feeling fancy.

THE SAVORY ONE

Sausage pizza is rich and savory, especially when fennel or herbs are added. Sangiovese-based reds or Rhône-style blends with Grenache and Syrah pair beautifully.

THE FRESH PICK

Veggie pizza can range from light and fresh to roasted and earthy, depending on the toppings. You can go the white wine route with a Sauvignon Blanc, Grüner Veltliner, or French-style Chardonnay, or choose a light-bodied red like Pinot Noir.

THE BOLD ONE

For those who pile on the meat toppings and enjoy bold, indulgent pizza, you will need a wine that can keep up with the flavor.

Lean toward full-bodied reds like a California Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Argentinian Malbec, or a full-bodied Italian red like Montepulciano.
